For my fellow thirty somethings who had their formulative years in the 80's, you might remember a little show called Amazing Stories. This weekly series consisted of two thirty minute episodes back to back that covered a mish mash of comedy, drama, sci-fi, animation, and all sorts of genres.
Amazing Stories was the brainchild of Steven Spielberg and was in the vein of the Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits in that the stories had a distinct "twist" on them.
Well, I just learned that Amazing Stories is coming out on DVD!

You know what that means? That you can get the original episode of The Family Dog, the animated wunderkind of director Brad Bird (The Incredibles, The Iron Giant). This animated segment is so funny and still holds up today as a shining example of top-notch animation.
So be sure to keep an eye out for the DVD set of all the episodes (in an eight disc boxed set) coming soon!

Yeah, I remember the Family Dog episode. Very funny. Also, I liked the babysitter episode and that one with the WWII bomber (with Kevin Costner and Kiefer Sutherland, I think)!
is this related to the amazing stories comic book series?
Maybe we need a new dog. Maybe we need a cat.
I haven't met, face to face, a single person that knows what those words mean. I'm so happy to find that you folks remember the show as well, or better, than I did.
I guess this will be another tv-show-on-dvd that I just have to buy.
(P.S. I think it was casey siemaszko in the bomber story)
"The boofas gone."
No relation to the Amazing Stories comic books as far as I can tell. Just similar names.
And yea, I think all three of them, Casey, Kevin and Keifer.
Hi Barry, I found your site a view months ago through a warhammer forum. I really enjoyed your strip Sorry We're Open and I was wondering if you will be making more strips. I apologize if this is answered somewhere on the site, I did not see it if it was
the dvd of amazing stories sounds cool. i really enjoyed the series on telly
No strips for the forseeable future, but I'll have the archives up sometime soon (hopefully).
Nothing will ever hold a candle to the original Twilight Zone, but that Family Dog episode was one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen.
I just remember the opening sequence the most. The flying book, the knight on horseback, a brief starship battle, and the old indian spinning a tale over a campfire to wee children. So much fun!
I look forward to this indeed!
Mmm good times, good times.
The DVD Set was supposed to be released about a year ago, I wandered Best Buy every week waiting for it to come in.
"You want your food?! I'll get your food. Why not, it seems to be the sole reason for my exsistence."
"Feed the dog. Feed the kids. Wash the clothes. Iron the clothes. DO I have dreams!? Do I have aspirations!? NO! But I have a toilet bowl that is springtime FRESH!"
Ahh. Such sweet memories. If memory serves, Annie Potts was the voice of the beloved mom with the frosted-tipped hair.
Just a small bit of trivia: The family dog ran in front of a major childrens theatrical release, sometime in the late eighties. My memory says it ran in front of the first "Land Before Time" @ 87-88, but I could be wrong. In any case, whatever short "children's" film it was, it ran six times a day (if you ever worked a movie theatre, you know what kind of madnesss that is) and six times a day we had to explain to really irate mothers that the "family dog" would be over soon. I recall mothers dragging their children from the theatre over that one.
My sisters and I STILL quote from that episode. We had it taped and watched it a million times as kids.
To this day, I still say "Pizza for Christmas Dinner" when the situation calls for it.
Most excellent. I've been tivoing Amazing Stories. My favorites were Mummy Daddy, and (I forget the title) the one about the cartoonist trapped in the airplane gunner bay.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one nostalgic over these.
Maybe we need a new dog. Maybe we need a cat.
Jaf - I feel your pain. My whole family knows those lines, and _noone else does_.
I use the "Do I have dreams? Do I have aspirations?" line now and again when I'm feeling the monotony of life pressing down on me. I look forward to being able to inflict my friends with this one.
I hadn't realize it was another reason to worship Brad Bird, though. *grins*
i found an old vhs, that i had put in the vcr after i just about peed myself laughing at this cartoon! i have been searching the net for about an hour trying to find this set to buy!
hope they do make the set, and am glad some other nutballs are still out there saying, " maybe we new a neeew dog... maaybe we need a CAT!!!". and oh, how many times have i looked at my fat little jack russell's fat belly and had a little flash back?... after eating all the "hide the evidence" casserole family dog can't move and twinkle-toes 180 degrees watching the house being robbed. "bff". Snap. i need my fix.
"Where's Maryanne?"
:) I have recited from this episode at random for the last twenty years, and no one ever knows to what I refer. I was beginning to think I'd invented it myself. Can't wait for this to come out so I can see it all over again. It's been too long!
From The Sitter: what were the scary creatures called?
The Family Dog is the funnyest cartoon I have ever watched. How would I be able to get every episode of the "Family Dog"? Will they all be on the DVD? Where and when will it hit the stores in Canada. I had a copy of one show and I accidently taped over it. The kids and my hubby still give me what-for for doing it. Would it be in Wal-Mart? I want to replace it for them but also give them all every episode.
We spent many an hour replaying the show. I'm sure the grandkids would love it too.
My dream is to find a set of complete episodes of the family dog (preferably on dvd) If ANYONE knows where i can purchase this..PLEASE LET ME KNOW! i'd be most grateful.
I can't believe I found this on YouTube!! Check it out.
