Who Watches "The Twelve"?

In my weekly pull bag at my local comics shop, I added a new limited series called The Twelve. It looked promising from the previews and from some pre-production art I saw. Essentially, 12 silver age heroes from the Marvel Universe were put in suspended animation at the end of WW2 and lost/forgotten. They are awakened in today's 616 world, post Civil War and will have to deal with a world, and more specifically an America, that is vastly different then the one they lived in.

As of this writing, only the first issue is out and I have read it and enjoyed it. But in reading it, it dawned on me that this book has the potential of being this generation's Watchmen. But after further consideration, it might be the anti-Watchmen.

Instead of breaking ground in the vein of superheroes as real people during a more innocent age of comics, as Watchmen did, it is almost revisiting the theme, but in the opposite way. Taking those gung ho and innocent heroes of the bygone era and bringing them into this modern comic era where an evil genius no longer gets a sock in the kisser, but instead gets a bullet to the brain and a graphic headshot.

I will be keeping an eye on this one.
