It was another memorable first for the Inktank team last night when we hosted our first meet up with MESS (Media Entertainment & Scientific Storage). The MESS community was created in July by Paul Evans of DAYSTROM and when we heard that they needed a location to host their Aug meet up, we jumped at the opportunity. MESS is all about large files, big data, and workflow optimization. It’s a place that peers can talk about storage challenges, discuss ways of dealing with them, and hear about the new technologies that are making a difference.
The discussion for the Aug meeting was Ceph. Our Ceph engineer @TV gave an informative/amusing presentation describing the overall Ceph architecture focusing primarily on the object, block & file capabilities and how this all fits in with many different storage dependent industries from Cloud to HPC. Once @TV’s presentation had come to a close, we opened up the floor for some general conversation to allow the audience time to dig a little deeper to see how Ceph relates to them specifically.
We have been actively involved with other LA meet ups since we launched last May. We have been sponsoring the OpenStack LA meet ups and now of course the MESS LA meet ups which we have agreed to host at least once every quarter. We are very excited to be actively involved and if you know of any meet ups that you think would be Ceph related then please shoot an email to jude@inktank.com as we would be delighted to talk with you. It does not have to be just LA either, so let us know.
Finally, a special thanks to our wonderful parents DreamHost who were very helpful with the succes of the evening.
