Welcome to the Webcomic Coach section of the website. Web cartooning is still a fledgling field and as we all grow and learn, I feel it is important to share things we have learned along the way. An open exchange of ideas will benefit web comics in general and lead to a better overall perception of the genre and, hopefully, provide us with better, more successful cartoonists.
I am relaunching this section after a long time away from the drawing table and over time I will be incorporating back into this section articles, resources and tutorials I've done for both my site as well as other sites (such as Rocketbox). My initial drive is to convert some of the older content and to set the foundation for future content. Eventually I would like to re-do areas, like my step by step tutorial (my work process has changed drastically) and post fresh, new content. Be sure to keep an eye on this section and in addition I'll be sure to make announcements when there is new content in the blog posts.
For now, Webcomic Coach offers these tidbits.
Tutorials:
- Making Word Balloons With Adobe Photoshop - A quick tutorial on making comic type word balloons with simple techniques in Adobe Photoshop.
- Specialty Word Balloons With Adobe Photoshop (coming soon) - Making "specialty" word balloons such as thought bubbles, technology and wobbly/drunk baloons.
- Making Word Balloons With Adobe Illustrator (coming soon) - A brief tutorial on making comic type word baloons using Adobe Illustrator (my prefered way to make edit text and make word baloons).
- Specialty Word Balloons With Adobe Illustrator (coming soon) - How to make "specialty" word balloons such as thought bubbles, technology and wobbly/drunk baloons with Adobe Illustrator.
Articles:
- Webcomic Definitions (coming soon)
- State of Mind: The Emotional Pursuit of Webcomics - Wheter you are a bright eyed beginner or a seasoned (or haggared) veteran of the webcomics scene, these are the stages that most (if not all) webcartoonists will go though at some point in their career. Where do you fit?
- Copyrights and Wrongs - A quick summary of what copyrights are, when they are in effect and what some of the common misconceptions are.
- Show Me The Muggy!: Merchandising On The Web - So you're ready to make merchandise. But should you pay a service like Cafepress or Lulu to make it, or do it yourself? Here I cover the pros and cons and some of the financial considerations to making swag and getting it to your fans.
Behind The Scenes:
- The InkTank Studio - A photo walkthough of my workspace. This is where the magic happens. And yes, it's clean and I try to keep it that way. Mostly. Well ... I try.
